23rd African Athletics Championships, MUSTAPHA BERRAF in Douala

The ANOCA President was in Douala, Cameroon, where the African Athletics Championships were held from 21- 26 June 2024, at the Japoma sports complex.

The Honourable Mustapha BERRAF had the opportunity to watch athletes from 49 African countries compete and presented medals to some of the champions. Many of them met the qualifying standards for the Olympic Games billed for Paris from 26 July to 8 August 2024.

He also held talks with African and world athletics officials, including Hamad Kalkaba MALBOUM, President of the Confederation of African Athletics and Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle KOMBI. Also present were World Athletics officials, including President Lord Sebastian COE.

I was delighted to see how committed and professional our athletes are and, we can confidently say that athletics will once again be a major asset for Africa in a few weeks’ time at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The competition will bring together the world’s greatest athletes, and our athletes are up to the task. I also commend the spirit of fair play that prevailed during these African Championships. I wish great success to all the qualified athletes as they take up the Paris 2024 challenge, so that Olympic and sporting Africa can stand proud and fulfilled during the Paris Olympic Games,” said Mustapha BERRAF.

President BERRAF attended the opening and closing ceremonies. In the final rankings, South Africa (18 medals), Nigeria (15 medals), Ethiopia (10 medals), Kenya (18 medals) and Algeria (8 medals) were the top five, while the host country, Cameroon, was ranked 17th with 7 medals.
