– ANOCA) is proud to announce that the second African Forum on Environmental Protection and the Fight Against Global Warming is scheduled for Hammamet, Tunisia, on 3 and 4 October 2025.
This major event follows on from the commitments made at the previous forum held in Algiers in March 2024, and which adopted key recommendations aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability in sport.
Under the theme “African Sport Addresses Climate Challenges: Acting Together for a Sustainable Future,” the Hammamet Forum will provide a strategic platform for representatives of the 54 African NOCs, IOC members, sustainable development experts, ministers responsible for sports and the environment, as well as institutional and private partners.
Discussions will explore strategies aimed at mainstreaming environmental sustainability into African sports policies, with particular emphasis on raising awareness among young people and promoting initiatives such as reforestation campaigns, responsible water resource management, and minimising waste production during sports events.
For the ANOCA President, Honourable Mustapha Berraf, “This forum is an essential step in stepping up our efforts and developing concrete action plans to position sport as a catalyst for raising awareness and addressing climate change in Africa. The impact of climate change on our sports infrastructure and practices can no longer be overlooked, nor can the crucial role that the African Olympic movement must play in preserving our environment.”
The forum will feature plenary sessions, thematic workshops and round tables with four main thrust areas:
- Adapting sports infrastructure to new climate realities;
- Training sports stakeholders on environmental issues;
- Developing educational programmes for young athletes;
- Creating a pan-African network of experts in sustainable sport.
The host, NOC Tunisia, will take adequate measures to ensure that the forum is a model of an environmentally responsible organisation. This includes a zero plastic waste policy and collaboration with local suppliers committed to sustainability.
NOC Tunisia’s President, Mehrez Boussayène, is highly expectant: “We are honoured to host this continental event, which fits perfectly with Tunisia’s national sustainable development strategy. Our ambition is to make this forum a model of responsible organisation that will inspire future sports events across the continent.”
The Hammamet recommendations will be factored into a continental action plan, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and IOC Agenda 2020+5. A Special Committee shall regularly monitor the commitments made and present progress reports at ANOCA General Assemblies.
