ANOCA Sustainability Forum : ANOCA rises to the climate challenge

LUANDA – ANGOLA, 15 December 2025

“Sport teaches us that impossible challenges are those we fail to take on together.”

Dear Sisters and Brothers of the African Olympic and Sports Movement,

When we held our inaugural African Forum on Sport and Climate in Algiers in 2024, many perceived it as just another conference. Little did they know that it will mark the genesis of a groundbreaking continental movement – the first stride towards an Africa that resolutely refuses to be a mere climate change casualty, but instead elects to become a solution provider.

This resounding success was just the starting point. Today, it is with pride and unwavering determination that I invite you to join us for the second edition, scheduled for 15 December 2025 in Luanda, which promises to be a watershed moment in our collective effort.

The urgency has never been more palpable. Our continent is warming at a rate 1.5 times faster than the global average. Our athletes are training in sweltering heat, sports infrastructure is under threat from rising sea levels, and our young talents are grappling with existential questions about the very future of sport.

Yet, where others see insurmountable obstacles, we discern an unparalleled opportunity – the opportunity to metamorphose African sport into a vibrant laboratory for innovation, a powerful engine for change, and a catalyst for tangible solutions that will resonate far beyond the confines of our stadiums.

ANOCA will no longer be a passive observer of climate change – we are galvanising sport as a potent force for transformation, driven by a clear vision: to propel the African Olympic Movement to the forefront of the fight against global warming. Not through empty rhetoric, but through tangible actions, binding commitments, and inspiring innovations.

We are not simply convening in Luanda to talk. We are gathering to take decisive action; to collectively deploy a continental roadmap that will metamorphose every NOC, every federation, and every sports event into a paradigm of sustainability; to forge symbiotic alliances between our governments, private partners, and sporting communities; and to empower every African athlete and leader with the requisite tools to become champions of change.

I heartily applaud the exemplary dedication of the Angola National Olympic Committee, which has risen to the challenge of hosting an eco-responsible forum, demonstrating that sustainability and excellence can and must go together.

Dear sisters, dear brothers, I extend a personal invitation to join this continental crusade for change. Your expertise, influence, and passion are crucial to metamorphosing African sport into an eco-friendly powerhouse. The ultimate Olympic triumph of our era will not be gauged solely by medals, but by the lasting legacy we bequeath to posterity.

Together, in Angola, let’s change the narrative to change the game. Let’s save our planet.
