In a “Ramadan” atmosphere marked by fraternity and solidarity, Hon. Mustapha BERRAF, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), hosted a collective Iftar dinner on 14 March 2026 at one of the iconic traditional restaurants in the Casbah of Algiers, in honour of African ambassadors accredited in Algeria, as part of the sports diplomacy initiative led by the ANOCA President and the members of the Executive Committee.
This gathering brought together a high-level diplomatic and sporting presence, including a large number of ambassadors from African countries, prominent personalities from the Olympic and sporting family of the continent, as well as representatives of international sports organisations.
This initiative provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation and consultation among the various stakeholders of the African sports movement. It also highlighted the essential role of sport as a powerful tool for cultural and diplomatic rapprochement between peoples.
A special tribute to the Italian State
The evening was marked by a significant moment: a special tribute to the President of the Italian Republic. On this occasion, the Ambassador of Italy to Algeria received a symbolic gift on his behalf.
This gesture was made in recognition of Italy’s support and cooperation with the African Olympic and sporting movement, as well as appreciation for its continued efforts to support African youth through exchange programmes, training initiatives and sports development projects.
Statement by Mustapha BERRAF
In his address, Mr. Mustapha BERRAF emphasised that the gathering fully reflected the spirit of solidarity that underpins the Olympic Movement:
“This gathering goes beyond the simple framework of a Ramadan Iftar dinner. It embodies the spirit of Olympic solidarity and demonstrates the depth of the relations that unite Africa with its international partners. The tribute we pay today to the Italian State is a message of recognition for its constant commitment to the development of sport on our continent and for its support to African youth towards a better future.”
The ANOCA President and IOC Member also highlighted the legendary hospitality of the Italian people and authorities.
Strengthening African cooperation through sport
In his closing remarks, Hon. Mustapha BERRAF stressed that the organisation of this event was in line with the high-level orientations of IOC President Kirsty Coventry, aimed at strengthening African cooperation and facilitating the development of sports partnerships among all countries of the continent.
He also recalled that Africa will always remain a privileged platform for promoting solidarity and integration among peoples through sport and Olympism.
Two videos were projected on a large screen during the evening: one highlighting ANOCA’s activities in support of African sport and Olympism, and another showcasing the recent Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Welcoming an initiative that is expected to continue in the future, the ambassadors and other guests warmly thanked their host, ANOCA President Hon. Mustapha Berraf, for his hospitality during this memorable evening.
