Statement from African Athletes on Gender-Based Violence

On behalf of African athletes, we express our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of our african sister and fellow Olympian Rebecca, whose life was tragically taken in a brutal act of violence. The devastating news of her death, after suffering such unimaginable cruelty at the hands of someone who should have protected her, has shocked and saddened us all.

As athletes, we are often seen as symbols of strength, resilience, and perseverance. Yet, even in the world of sports, we are not immune to the pervasive issue of gender-based violence. This tragedy serves as a painful reminder that too many women, including those who have achieved greatness on the world stage, continue to face violence and abuse.

We stand united in condemning all forms of gender-based violence. No person, regardless of their status, should ever experience such cruelty. It is time for action—across Africa and the world—to ensure that no woman or girl has to live in fear for her life, and that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

We call upon governments, sports organizations, and communities to prioritize the fight against gender-based violence. We must raise awareness, provide support for survivors, and work to prevent these tragedies from happening. Let this be a turning point, where we not only mourn the loss of a remarkable athlete but also commit to fostering a society that respects and protects the dignity of every individual.

Rebecca, your legacy will not be forgotten, and we will continue to fight for a world free from violence.

With deepest sympathy and solidarity,
Gaby Ahrens, ANOCA Athletes Commission Chair
On behalf of African Athletes
