Mustapha Berraf wins the confidence of his peers and calls for the unity of the african olympic movement

He was re-elected this May 25, 2021 in Cairo, Egypt for a new four-year term on the sidelines of the 19th Ordinary Session of the ANOCA General Assembly.

The outgoing president obtained 35 votes against 15 for his opponent, the Burundian Lydia Nsekera.

At the end of the vote won by a huge margin, Mustapha Berraf commended his opponent.

Lydia Nsekera showed her legendary sportsmanship by accepting the result of the election.

Members of the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa   appointed three first Vice-Presidents, namely Joao Da Costa Alegre Afonso from Sao Tome and Principe (1st)

Matlohan Moiloa-Ramoqopo from Lesotho (2nd) and Fardouza Moussa Egueh from Djibouti (4th).

The position of 4th Vice-president went to the Moroccan Kamal Lahlou who defeated his challenger Negroes Maleala Kgosietsile of Botswana by 27 votes to 25.

The Secretary General is Ahmed Abou Elgasim Hashim who was re-elected. The Treasurer General Habu Ahmed Gumel was reelected by an overwhelming majority.

This team will work under the chairmanship of Mustapha Berraf, member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who has been re-elected for a new term based on ANOCA’s strategic plan for 2021-2025 and a sustainable development plan.

Mustapha Berraf stated:

“I am very honored by the renewed confidence bestowed on me by my African peers at the head of this valuable institution and I pledge to continue the efforts for the development of sport in Africa”.

Together, we shall overcome all the challenges and provide our athletes and coaches the best conditions. I once again call on my colleagues to ensure an exemplary and significant participation of our continent in the upcoming Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

The election took place in the presence of the 54 representatives of ANOCA member countries and the IOC African representatives.

In his opening remarks, the President of the International Olympic Committee paid a vibrant tribute to ANOCA under the leadership of Mustapha Berraf for the effort made and challenges overcome. He further urged all participants to ensure a massive representation at the Olympic Games and warmly thanked the NOC of Egypt and its President for having accepted to host this great world event.
