Statement by african athletes

Over 100 African athletes representatives taking part in the Continental Athletes’ Forum held in Algiers this weekend have unanimously expressed their full support of the resolution adopted by the ANOCA executive board on 3 March 2023, welcoming the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes competing as neutral athletes in international competitions.

The participants from 50 National Olympic Commission (NOC) Athletes’ Commissions (ACs) across Africa gathered in Algiers, Algeria, for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Athletes’ Forum.

In their discussions they reiterated that athletes should never pay the price of a conflict whatever it is and wherever it is.

Politics should not put pressure on Sport to withdraw from its fundamental values of solidarity and unity.
